چکیده

Abstract California (USA) supports the largest legal cannabis market in world, yet faces increasing risk from wildfire. While anecdotal evidence of impacts to crops has been documented during recent extreme fire seasons, economic losses resulting smoke exposure and other indirect effects (e.g., ash fall, mandatory evacuations, power outages) are not well understood. We conducted an online survey licensed farms across state, reporting wildfire on 2018 through 2021. summarized regional variation reported crop losses, fit a hierarchical multinomial model assess proximity crops, trained random forest make impact predictions for all state-licensed outdoor farms. found that experienced wildfire-related growing regions 2020, but northern particularly high loss four study years. also was stronger predictor than The output our suggested substantial industry with predicted between 4.54% 21.61% statewide, 9.09% 42.83% northernmost counties. Estimated potential 2020 2021 were as $1.44 billion $970.04 million, respectively—losses which themselves exceed annual values many California’s agricultural commodities. Together results indicate whole. suggest more attention be given strategies mitigating wildfires, especially light occurrence severity under climate change.

Critical Review of Health Impacts of Wildfire Smoke Exposure

BACKGROUND Wildfire activity is predicted to increase in many parts of the world due to changes in temperature and precipitation patterns from global climate change. Wildfire smoke contains numerous hazardous air pollutants and many studies have documented population health effects from this exposure. OBJECTIVES We aimed to assess the evidence of health effects from exposure to wildfire smoke...

Non-Accidental Health Impacts of Wildfire Smoke

Wildfires take a heavy toll on human health worldwide. Climate change may increase the risk of wildfire frequency. Therefore, in view of adapted preventive actions, there is an urgent need to further understand the health effects and public awareness of wildfires. We conducted a systematic review of non-accidental health impacts of wildfire and incorporated lessons learned from recent experienc...

Wildfire smoke exposure and human health: Significant gaps in research for a growing public health issue.

Understanding the effect of wildfire smoke exposure on human health represents a unique interdisciplinary challenge to the scientific community. Population health studies indicate that wildfire smoke is a risk to human health and increases the healthcare burden of smoke-impacted areas. However, wildfire smoke composition is complex and dynamic, making characterization and modeling difficult. Fu...

Passive cannabis smoke exposure and oral fluid testing.

Oral fluid testing for Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) provides a convenient means of detection of recent cannabis usage. In this study, the risk of positive oral fluid tests from passive cannabis smoke exposure was investigated by housing four cannabis-free volunteers in a small, unventilated, and sealed room with an approximate volume of 36 m(3). Five active cannabis smokers were also pre...

Workplace Secondhand Smoke Exposure in the U.S. Trucking Industry

BACKGROUND Although the smoking rate in the United States is declining because of an increase of smoke-free laws, among blue-collar workers it remains higher than that among many other occupational groups. OBJECTIVES We evaluated the factors influencing workplace secondhand smoke (SHS) exposures in the U.S. unionized trucking industry. METHODS From 2003 through 2005, we measured workplace S...
